{"id":388,"date":"2019-02-22T11:06:42","date_gmt":"2019-02-22T16:06:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.menshealthnetwork.org\/Breastcancer\/?p=388"},"modified":"2023-06-11T11:00:02","modified_gmt":"2023-06-11T15:00:02","slug":"male-breast-cancer-sassy-chick","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mensbreastcancer.org\/?p=388","title":{"rendered":"Male Breast Cancer &#8211; Sassy Chick"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>November 26, 2018 By: sassychick<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sassychick.org\/male-breast-cancer\/#respond\">comment<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"male breast cancer\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.sassychick.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/male-breast-cancer-682x1024.png?resize=682%2C1024&amp;ssl=1\" width=\"682\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I recently had a routine check-up with my radiation oncologist.\u00a0 \u00a0While I was at the cancer center, I met Robert, a volunteer at the American Cancer Society kiosk.\u00a0 The station provides information regarding resources for patients and even has a few wigs to try on.\u00a0 I was fortunate enough to receive two wigs there while I was on treatment for FREE!<\/p>\n<p>I got to talking to Bob.\u00a0 He said that the reason he volunteers for the American Cancer Society is to make folks aware that men have breast cancer too.\u00a0 What a great reminder!<\/p>\n<h2>Yes, Men Do Get Breast Cancer Too<\/h2>\n<p>Thankfully it is fairly uncommon.\u00a0 But male breast cancer does happen.\u00a0 According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc, male breast cancer makes up less than one percent of all breast cancer and only one in a thousand men will ever be diagnosed with breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Bob told me that he was in the parking lot after his doctor\u2019s appointment and realized that he forgot to bring the mass to his doctor\u2019s attention.\u00a0 Thankfully he did go back and in and his work up was initiated.<\/p>\n<p>Bob is correct.\u00a0 Men that do find a breast lump, are less likely to assume a mass is breast cancer which delays going to the doctor for diagnosis and treatment.<\/p>\n<h2>Symptoms<\/h2>\n<p>Men usually have a lump or mass that can be felt.\u00a0 Other symptoms can include, a change in size or shape of the breast, a dimple or puckering in the skin, a change in the nipple, fluid draining from the nipple and scaly, red or swollen skin on the breast, nipple, or areola.\u00a0 Just like women, if men have any of these symptoms they should seek prompt medical attention.<\/p>\n<h2>Treatment of Male Breast Cancer<\/h2>\n<p>Treatment can be similar to women\u2019s breast cancer including surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and hormone therapy.<\/p>\n<h2>Survival<\/h2>\n<p>According to the National Cancer Institute, survival for men with breast cancer is similar to survival to women with breast cancer.\u00a0 But again men tend to be diagnosed at a later stage due to not seeking diagnosis and treatment immediately.<\/p>\n<h2>Additional Information<\/h2>\n<p>The national cancer institute\u2019s website has amazing resources for most types of cancer.
